Biological Large Language Models in Applications - What Can We Learn From Base Pairs
Valentyn Bezshapkin
(MD, PhD student, Institute of Microbiology ETH Zurich)
Since its inception, molecular biology has borrowed the vocabulary of the scribe, placing 'transcription' and 'translation' at its centre. We have since extended the conceptual bridge, seeking grammatical order in the never-ending stream of DNA pouring out of sequencing machines. Today, by feeding this gargantuan library into language models, we are finally decoding the narrative patterns that allow us to rewrite short prose viral genomes and spot tragic spelling errors that define human disease.
