FLASH radiotherapy: A new strategy for the therapeutic management of cancer patients

Conventional cancer radiotherapy delivers radiation at a low dose rate, but there is a reemergence of research on radiation delivery at ultra-high dose rates (UHDRs). The promise and intense interest in UHDRs involves the FLASH effect, a biological response that maintains anti-tumor efficacy without the normal tissue complications of standard radiotherapy. The clinical implications of this new area of research are highly significant, as FLASH radiotherapy has the potential to enhance the therapeutic index, opening new possibilities for eradicating radio-resistant tumors without toxicity.
