Many shades of green: the quest for sustainable agriculture

Sara Bonetti (Assistant professor, EPFL)
With 10 billion people projected to live on Earth by 2050, agricultural systems will face tremendous pressure to meet the growing food demand of an increasing and wealthier population. An integral part of this challenge is to address the concomitant concerns for land and water degradation and the impacts on and from climate change. In this talk, we’ll dive into some of the many environmental impacts of agricultural production and discuss recent solutions proposed to concurrently ensure food security, mitigate climate change, and cope with predicted future changes while preserving environmental resources.

Innovating for a greener future: sustainable packaging solutions for a circular economy

Dagmara Trojanowska (Postdoc, Laboratoire des Polymères, EPFL)
Plastic waste is a growing environmental challenge, but nature offers sustainable alternatives. In this talk, we explore how waste biomass, such as plant residues and keratin from wool, can be transformed into high-performance materials. From isocyanate-free polyurethane foams to moldable bioplastics, these innovations demonstrate how science can turn waste into valuable resources. By rethinking packaging materials, we can move towards a circular economy - one where sustainability and functionality go hand in hand. Join us to discover how cutting-edge research is shaping the future of eco-friendly packaging!

Orbae: making the impacts of agriculture visible worldwilde

Cécile Hourse (Public relations, AdAstra Sustainability)
While science identifies stopping deforestation by 2030 as a key solution for addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, agrifood companies have faced significant challenges in pinpointing where their interventions can be of greatest value. Orbae is the first technology to automatically calculate environmental metrics on land conversion for commodities worldwide in 30-meter resolution, enabling more targetedinterventions to end deforestation. Orbae leverages publicly available science to address a critical problem that has so far eluded scalable solutions. Our network of supporters includes some of the world's largest agrifood companies, NGOs, consultancies, and researchers alike.
